Summer Yard Games for all ages

Summer Yard Games for All Ages

It's finally summer time again which means you're probably looking for any excuse to get outside. One of the best ways to spend a summer day is by playing yard games with the whole family. They are a great way to have some fun, spend time with the family, and make sure the kids are getting plenty of exercise while they're off from school. So, what are some of the best yard games to play this summer that are appropriate for all ages?

Lawn Twister

This version has all the fun of the classic game with a twist of being able to go outside! Start by cutting out a few circular stencils that can be used outdoors. Then, purchase a few different colors of spray paint that is safe to be sprayed on your lawn. Be sure to check that the paint is not harmful to the environment and that it won't kill the grass on your lawn. It’s also useful to have soft and groomed grass to play on when team members take a tumble! Next, spray paint various circles in whatever fun pattern you wish and start to play. If you don't have the spinner from the original game of twister, just take turns being the leader who calls out what hand or foot to put on what color.

Frozen T-Shirt Races

This activity is perfect for all ages and is one of the best ways to stay cool in the summer if you don't have access to a pool. Simply get a t-shirt soaking wet, place into a freezer safe plastic bag, and freeze overnight. Form teams and head outside to start the relay. Start the race to see who can be the first squad to successfully thaw the shirts, put it on, run to the end of the yard and back. You'll be surprised how difficult it is to take the shirts on and off!

Water Balloon Fights

What better way to cool off than with an old fashioned water balloon fight? Be sure to fill up plenty of water balloons and split them between two teams or just have a free for all! Be sure to allow for additional time for clean up when the fun is over. The popped balloons can be hazardous to pets and kids!

Rollors

Players “roll” disks at the goal and points are awarded to the player/team that positions their disks closest to the goal. Think of Rollors as a cross between Bocce ball, horseshoes, and lawn bowling.

Badminton

This classic game is perfect for outdoor fun as it’s great to play as teams or just one on one. It is incredibly easy to setup and can make for a full afternoon of fun. The bonus of badminton is that you can also work on hand eye coordination with your kids in a fun setting.

Glow In The Dark Bowling

This simple yet cool game is perfect for warm summer nights. Simply crack some glow sticks into 10 empty water bottles and arrange them as you would bowling pins. You can use any kind of ball ranging from a volleyball to a soccer ball as a bowling ball.

Tug Of War

A classic tug of war requires nothing more than two teams and a rope. Whoever can pull the other team to their side wins! To make it more interesting, consider playing the game over a kiddie pool of water to raise the stakes!
